Looking for volunteers!

The Haven Diaper Bank is coming!

We need volunteers! The Diaper Bank is almost ready to go and we will need some help to get it organized. The upstairs needs a good cleaning and a little help getting it set up. We will also need help once we have the diaper shower to repackage the diapers into the proper size packages. It’s going to be exciting and fun to get it all arranged.

The Diaper Bank will be designed to help out families in emergency situations only. It will not be a regular source of diapers, but a program to help families get their diaper needs under control. We are hoping to have cloth diapers available as the program moves forward and be able to help families move into a more economical and environmentally sound diapering method.

Some people may be wondering why we are doing this. Here are some facts about the diaper need in the US from the National Diaper Bank Network.

  • 5.3 million children in the U.S. aged three or younger live in poor or low-income families.
  • 1 in 3 American families reports experiencing diaper need.
  • Diapers cannot be obtained with food stamps.
  • Disposable diapers cost $70 to $80 per month per baby.
  • No state or federal child safety-net program allocates dollars specifically for the purchase of diapers.
  • Without transportation, buying diapers at a convenience store rather than a large “big box” store can significantly increase the monthly cost of diapers.
  • Infants require up to 12 diapers per day, toddlers about 8.

Negative Consequences

  • Babies who remain too long in a soiled diaper are exposed to potential health risks.
  • Most childcare centers, even free and subsidized facilities require parents to provide a day’s supply of disposable diapers.
  • Cloth diapers are not accepted at the vast majority of child care centers.
  • Many parents cannot go to work or school if they can’t leave their babies at child care.

One of the core beliefs of The Haven is to help end the cycle of welfare. For families to move out of poverty and end the cycle of welfare they need access to childcare so they can get better jobs or go back to school. This is one of the only ways possible for a family to escape poverty and get out of the cycle of welfare. This diaper bank will be a step to encouraging a family out of the welfare system.

We hope you will come help us get ready! We look forward to seeing you!
